The Stanton Social - A Pleasant but Unimaginative Experience

I just wanted to chime in on the Stanton Social. My younger sister and I went in to Manhattan last week and decided to go to the Stanton Social for dinner. I'm from Cleveland and she's from Connecticut, and we're both pretty sophisticated for our ages (late teens, early twenties).

I was pretty unimpressed with the Stanton Social. My sister was totally charmed by the small plated format but I thought that they way they handled it was odd. You had to order all of your plates at once, and they would bring them out in no particular order. This made it really hard to order anything individually, so we had to share everything. While the idea of this was nice, my sister and I had different appetites, tastes, and budgets and I think we would have ordered differently, and been more satisfied for it, had it been easier to order individually. They told us that 4-6 plates would be good for 2. We got 5 and left still hungry and we're pretty small people. I'd expect to order 8-10 for 2 if you want a full meal. They asked us at the end if we wanted anything else, but the cost didn't really justify the quality of the food and we ended up leaving before we were full.

The food was alright, but totally unimaginative. We got beef carpaccio, which was nice but pretty standard. Each slice of beef had a fried caper on it which was a nice texture. We also got goat cheese pierogi, which was nice, if lacking acid, but appeared deep fried, so I wouldn't be inclined to call them pierogi. The french onion soup dumplings were pretty ok. It was just a dumpling filled with caramelized onions with cheese on top, and didn't live up to the hype. We also got the charred edamame, which was really good, but I'm pretty sure I could make at home. The final thing we got was the thai style ribs, which were wonderful.

The service was mixed. Our main server was very rude, and rarely came to the table, but a few other servers picked up the slack.

Anyway, just thought I'd chime in.
