Gave The Wedge Inn’s cheesesteak a try today. Not worth the effort.

I tend to stay away from Wedge because I’ve always found them to be overpriced for the quantity and quality that they provide. I'll hit them up once a year or so to see if they've changed things up at all, but that hasn't happened yet. Incredibly average burgers, fries, dogs, and now I can say that the cheesesteak’s no exception. For six bucks and change you get a standard, generic cheesesteak. Nothing wonderful or exceptional. The meat appears to be pre-sliced in the same family as a Steak-umm, slightly better quality, but nothing like freshly cut meat. For the amount they charge I expect either higher quality meat in the same portion, or the same quality meat they provided but in a larger portion (no Annie Hall jokes, please). A cheesesteak should appear to be almost overstuffed, and this wasn’t even close.

I’ve been wracking my brain trying to think of a good cheesesteak place in Stamford, and the best I could come up with is Daddy’s Deli over on East Main St. behind the Blockbuster. It’s not a traditional “Philly” cheesesteak. The steak isn’t sliced, it’s cubed into chunks, but it seems as if it’s freshly cut that day. They do it hot-tray style, one with mushrooms and onions, the other with peppers (and maybe onions, I’m not sure. I never get that tray because I’m not a pepper fan). Cheese slices, too – no Wiz. As a warning, some may think that the meat is too salty for their tastes. Not me, though! The sandwich is overflowing with meat. I tend to get a fork as well to spear any of the morsels that try to escape the party. Half a wedge of this sandwich is plenty. And it costs about the same as the sandwich from The Wedge Inn. (it’s been a couple of months since I’ve been, though.)

I do intend to try Smokey Joe’s cheesesteak at some point.
