Visited a friend in St. Louis recently and ventured into the Delmonico Diner on Delmar, near Central West End. It's a soul food find, delightfully unexpected in a nondescript area. the restaurant is much larger than you think - a bunch of long and round tables, plastic chairs, and a kitchen and cafeteria line in the back. the decor is southern country kitsch, patriotism, black pride and christian inspiration all rolled into one. on friday, they have a meat and 2 sides with bread for just under $6. we tried the fried chicken, baked chicken, stuffing with chicken gravy, yams, mac& cheese, boiled cabbage, and white or corn bread with cranberry jam, and the peach cobbler. had lemonade and sweet tea to wash it down. it's cafeteria style service so you go to the back, get a tray, go down the line and order your drinks at the cashier who provides you with your beverage and cup (1 free refill with the tea).
the fried chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy inside; the cobbler was nicely spiced. they also had fried and baked catfish, green beans, baked beans, corn and sweet potato pie.
a great chowhound find.
