SS bowls and electric hand whisk safety

I may just be being silly, but I attempted to make my first buttercream yesterday, so opted to use a stainless steel bowl as a bain marie (double boiler), then whisk the egg whites in it until cold, using a handheld electric double beater whisk....but now I notice the bottom of my bowl is really scratched up and am worried the food is contaminated with metal... is it something I should worry about or is it completely normal and safe?
