Sripaphai - best not to go during peak times

Linda Songe | Aug 22, 2004 02:29 PM

Hi all - not to be a downer about beloved Chowhound favorites - I had posted here a few months ago about Mina in Queens going downhill. As you know, it turned out that Mina herself had left the restaurant, confirmed by other Chowhounders' posting about their own downhill experiences there. Alas, Mina has resurfaced at Angon in Manhattan, where we went last night and had one of the best meals ever - Mina lives and is as great as ever. I posted a review on the Manhattan board and I'm praying all us outer-borough Chowhounders go there so the Angon thrives. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago we went to Sripaphai in Queens and it was the first subpar meal we ever had there. I don't think this qualifies Sripapahi for a downhill alert though. We went on a Saturday night a few minutes before 9:30 pm and they were rushed as can be; they stop cooking, they said, between 9:15 pm and 9:30 pm before their 10 pm closing. We begged them to serve us and they actually did. The food came out in lightning speed and it wasn't even as good as a neighborhood Lemongrass Grill - a shocker. Just no lovin' in the food prep as is normally the case at Sripaphai. Others we know confirm: Gotta go to Sripaphai early, early, early, not later than 6 pm on a busy night.
