first a warmup. i was walking around bay ridge and grabbed a margherita slice at BEN's on 3rd ave. very nice, fresh and lots of fresh basil which i love. fyi--the #1 bus on bay ridge blvd takes you east right to L&B on 86th.
ok lets cut to the chase. both pizzeria's sicilian squares are awesome. i got two at both places.
L&B SPUMONI GARDENS dough was lighter and yeastier. i had a corner and an edge, both were nicely done on the edge, with some charring. bottom not charred. sauce was light and tangy, perfect to my taste. cheese was thin and spotted, just a bit charred here and there, also just right imo. bottom only is greasy, no grease on the top. i walked off with a delicious spumoni dessert. heaven.
terror alert time out: i walked off L&B by walking down stillwell to coney. when i walked under the shore belt parkway, about halfway, the dt's pulled over and stopped me. "what are you doing?" i told them, "walking off some L&B squares on my way to the beach." they let me walk. welcome to the new world order!
post-coney: DIFARA's crust is heavier and more filling and really much more "typical" in that respect, but thats the only thing typical of course. edges and bottom charred perfectly. sauce is tangy, but heavier, more soulful and filling. lots of dom's fresh basil is in there. heavy superb cheese all over, partially yet pefectly charred. dom has a good eye and nose and quite some internal clock for timing, no? bottom is not at all greasy, top has some grease, but mostly water dampness from the fresh cheeses and sauce. if you try to eat these right out of the oven like i did, the cheese will slide right off! so a little patience pays off in ease of eating.
so both squares are pretty different, but each wonderful in their own way. i highly rec wasting a gorgeous afternoon in this manner!
