It's not easy to please 15 people on an ice-breaker type social event, but this place managed.
Tiny signage: 1905 Chestnut Street. Much attention to detail, like the pickled leek beside the sparerib appetizer (excellent); slices of pickled lotus root beside the diagnonally sliced spring roll; different saucing on every dish we ordered; high quality all around. Nice plates; calm decor, attentive friendly service.
Our table shared lobster with ginger and scallion sauce; shrimp with black bean sauce, and a Szechuan chicken dish. EVery dish met with oohs and aahs from our table. Another table had a fabulous looking big piece of meat with lots of sauce, and snap peas on the side. Turned out to be orange beef. They gave me a taste, and it was yummy. Another table ordered mango chicken. It was beautifully presented atop two mango shells.
It's not in Chinatown, but this place has its act together, and food did not appear to be "dumbed down" for American tastes. BTW, pricing was quite reasonable for this quality. ONly $16 for a generous portion of lobster; $7 for top-notch spareribs. We did not have soup, but they sounded interesting, and priced around $2-3. Great place to go alone, or with a group.
