Square Meal

Three of us had a great dinner at Square Meal on Saturday night. For apps, we ordered the crispy calamari over citrus coleslaw and spring vegetable salad which consisted of snow peas, string beans and asparagus with buttermilk dressing. The calamari was wonderfully light and we loved the slaw which was not mayo based. Entrees consisted of roasted salmon with mache and very thin slices of cucumber with a lemon dressing which was great and seared scallops with oyster mushrooms and fingerling potatoes, with more mache on the side. I loved the combination of the ingredients for the scallops. Desserts were three chocolate covered grand marnier puffs which were wonderful and a very homemade tasting apple/strawberry/bing cherry pie with whipped cream on the side. Food was delicious. Service was great, water refilled at all times. We said that we were sharing everything and sharing plates were brought out during each course. The room was quiet and a wonderful place to linger and have a nice leisurely meal which we did.

My only criticism was that the salmon should have been a little rarer. The waiter did not ask how we wanted it. My friend’s only complaint was that all the staff wore jeans. She did not think this was appropriate for that type of place. All in all a great meal, too bad this restaurant is not in my neighborhood, but I hope to be back especially before the end of this summer as parking was really easy on a Saturday night.
