I know I posted late on Fri so a belated thanks for all the well-intended posts.
I ended up doing a little searching on chowhound and decided to head to the Lobster Pool, in Rockport. Past the main center of town, just past Halibut Point. Was exactly what I was looking for; it faces the west overlooking the ocean, perfect spot to enjoy a lobster dinner and check out the sunset. Which is exactly what we did till a storm blew in, and we had to run under cover. Luckily there is indoor seating. Food was very good, not necessarily exceptional, but how do you make a boiled lobster exceptional anyway? Actually, the lobster was one of the better ones I've enjoyed, a really soft shell so easy to crack, and then really sweet, tender meat. Not cheap at $20 for 1 1/4 but good. You get fries and slaw with that too. I had to order a side of onion rings, which were excellent. Lightly battered and sufficiently greasy....mmmm. Had a cup of chowder, which was good, not gloppy but definitely a cream base and I prefer the much-harder-to-find milky base. (which I believe Kelly's serves in it's off-peak season, abt the only thing I'd eat at Kelly's).
We got clam STRIPS, I know, I know, sort of a sacrilidge and I think we believe that now too. Sort of tasteless little balls of dough....what's the point really? Other than that, food was good, service was friendly, view was stellar.
I'd recommend this spot.
