the room is cozy, the bartender friendly, (we sat at the bar), but the food, not great. ordered 3 apps (gnudi, thinly sliced pork, and bruscetta with mint and something) and one of the special beers, maybe a lager. while the beer was delicious and cold, the food was very close to tasteless. with batali as a partner, i figured we were in for some flavorful grubbing. we were basing our decision to stay for dinner on whether the apps inspired. they resoundingly did not. we left.
once again, the lure of Daddy-O's simple and delicious bar food was too strong. they don't claim to be a "gastropub," they're just a bar with great food. if you've never had their grilled ham and cheese, their brunch or their bloody marys, you've been depriving yourself---bedford & 7th ave. also, wogie's cheesesteaks are definitely excellent as well and worth the trip.
now that's gastro-pubbery without paying extra for the honor.
