C and I took a trip up to New Haven yesterday in our shiny new silver grubmobile to gain personal insight on the recent downhill report posted by the A-hound. We only had one pie, a large white clam. Now, C is a CT native and a childhood eater of NH 'za whereas I, as a native NYC denizen, am a newbie as far as NH 'za is concerned.
We found the crust to be a little thicker and breadier than it was the last time we were there, and there certainly was a little puddling of olive oil toward the center of the pie, but overall we found the thing to be very damn tasty indeed, with plenty of tender freshly shucked clams and fresh garlic. All I can say is that if this represents a serious downhill trend, the original acme must have been a truly awesome peak.
BTW lines of people waiting were in evidence the entire time we were present.
