For all of us who work in the Flatiron/Union Square area who are on a never-ending quest to add a new lunch place to the rotation, Spoon just opened at 17 W. 20th between 5th and 6th (on the north side of the street, closer to 5th where that deli/salad bar used to be). It's a little storefront, with no tables. It seems like a good deal of their business is catering (to photoshoots especially).
Poked in this morning at the breakfast foods which looked fabulous, esp. the biscuit with bacon, egg and cheese (I'd already eaten, so I didn't sample it).
Met the owner, who told me all baking is in-house except the croissants, which they get from La Bergamote on 9th Ave.
Came back again to actually eat lunch -- they have a few pre-made salads, sandwiches, soups and mini-quiches. Salads/sandwiches in the $5-7 range. Soups $3/$4.50. I had a very nice spinach salad with feta, cherry tomatoes and green peas. Not huge, but big enough for lunch; the veggies were fresh and the cheese and peas generous. Comes with a little baguette-like breadstick, which was disappointingly not hot. I had higher hopes for the bread, but it was fine. More on the chewy side than the crusty side. The friendly owner also threw in a free cookie (oatmeal -- very yummy, and sort of rustic -- you could taste the oats -- not to mention the butter).
Definitely a good addition to my lunch routine -- I mean, you can't eat at Rainbow Falafel every day.
