On my first-ever visit to Spokane last week my friend (not from their either) had the great idea of asking the women who work at Williams Sonoma at the mall downtown for lunch advice. The told us to leave the mall and walk a couple of blocks north to the old Davenport Hotel for their $9 "Express lunch".
The Davenport is a great old hotel and the lobby is gorgeous in a railroad robber-baron sort of way and big enough that the blazing fire in the fireplace didn't heat up the room. Lunch was a variety of nice salads including an excellent salmon-pasta-wholegrain mustard salad, a carving station of turkey or ham, three or four sauces, rolls. Just right and all delicious. You can either eat in the dining room or tables in the lobby, which we did because it was such a great space. They also have a dessert menu that looked good but we didn't need it at that point, and each got a chocolate at Godiva back in the mall where the lady pointedly corrected my too-southern pronunciation of praline, saying prah-lee-naaaayyyy. The white chocolate prah-lee-naaaaaayyyyy was as nasty as every Godiva chocolate I have ever had.
