Splitting a thread

tarteaucitron | Jan 26, 2008 03:12 PM

I noticed that a branch of a discussion I was recently taking part in, was split and made into a new thread. While its subject was made to be as descriptive as possible, it is still confusing because the resulting "discussion" is missing the context that originally preceded it.

I don't agree with the decision to make the split for the particular example I was referring to (IMO the branch is not off-topic; it simply adds more depth to the discussion) although I can see the intention behind it.

I have a suggestion that, if this is to happen again, is it possible to include a simple post where the removed branch was, that says something like:

The discussion has been split at this point and can be found here: <link>

While the new resulting discussion would start with a simple post to say something like:

This discussion originated from another thread which can be found here: <link>

I believe the above would be handy to those who have been actively following the discussion, as well as to those who happen to stumble onto the newly-orphaned thread at some point.

Please consider and thanks.
