Had the pleasure of dining at Splashes on Christmas Day. Had never been there before but was surprised as it was a very solid meal.
It was a price fix menu.
The amuse was a homemade potato chip topped with kobe beef tartar and some sort of sauce. The chip was a little greasy, and the beef could have been ground beef for all I knew, but it tasted good.
For my starter I chose the Foie Gras. It was excellent. A good sized piece served with a round of toasted bread, halved grapes, and a sweet syrupy oily sauce. I dug it the most. The liver alone was fabulous. And then with a bite of grape, or with some bread and sauce it was even better. The other starters at the table were a gold beet salad, a scallop over clam chowder, and a lobster salad, and all were very good as well.
FOr my main I had the veal chop served over mashed potatoes with a mushroom gravy. It was good. I had it cooked medium rare, and it could have been a little less done. It was a little bland, but with some of the gravy was nice. Other entrees were the salmon and the filets.
For dessert I had the Buche de Noel. It was wonderful. The cake was light and airy and spongy, and the mocha flavored buttercream was super rich and tasty. I did not care for the caramel drizzled on the plate. THe other desserts I tried, the chocolate soup and the lemon curd tart were very good as well.
Overall it was a good meal The view was fabulous. I liked that the place is casual. My only fault was the service. They kept coming by and taking the plates off of the table before everyone had finished, and I needed to ask for water. At $75 a person the service needs to be better.
But it was a nice way to spend christmas.
