Last night, due to a combination of tickets to the Guthrie and a Star Tribune “steals” coupon, my husband and I ate at Spill the Wine. Last year, we had a wine dinner with them and were not at all impressed with the food. However, I felt like I had to give the restaurant its due and try the “regular” menu before making a decision.
Since we were part of the theater crowd, we were seated during happy hour. We ordered the Tempranillo off the happy hour menu, $15 for a bottle. Not bad, for $15…but if it had been a regularly priced bottle, I would have been very disappointed.
For appetizers, we had the bruschetta (traditional bruschetta and another crostini with olive tapenade) and the cheese plate. Both were solid and I would order them again.
Then comes the main course. I am a vegetarian and, as they did not have any vegetarian options, I ordered the gnocchi, spinach, chicken dish without the chicken. It wasn’t bad, a little on the salty side, but edible and I finished my meal.
My husband ordered the steak frites. His steak, which he ordered medium well, came burned. After trying to eat around the burnt parts, he finally gave up and had it returned to the kitchen. However, he had ordered the last steak. The restaurant was very accommodating, and he ordered the pasta special in its place, which was satisfactory.
To make up for the error, we were given a complimentary dessert and we chose a peanut butter chocolate lump (I can’t remember what they were called). Not too bad, but exceptionally sweet.
All in all: the service was fine, and the server seemed mortified that one of her dishes was returned. The food, aside from the steak, was passable. But would I return? Probably not. I’ve scratched that itch, and there’s much better food out there.
