Spike's Hot Chicken & Dogs, Carrboro, NC

Tom from Raleigh | Dec 14, 201810:32 AM     2

My wife and I just had lunch from Spike's Hot Chicken & Dogs in Carrboro. This place is where the meatball shop was previously. It was pretty, pretty good. We've both had Nashville hot chicken before and while we liked it, the Nashville hot chicken we had in Nashville was so spicy hot that it wasn't enjoyable. We found Spike's chicken even the hottest variety to be somewhat hot but not overwhelming. The chicken pieces themselves were ably fried. The sides had some real highlights. The mac and cheese was good but unobtrusive. My wife thought it could have used a sharper cheddar to compete with the other bold flavors on the menu. The fries were your typical frozen, crinkle cut fries. They tasted exactly like my memory of Linda's fries, that is to say bland and flavorless. Al's Burger's uses frozen crinkle cuts as well, but his have flavor. One bartender at Beer Study conjectured that Al was using some beef tallow in the fryer which is what McDonald's used to do back in the day. We also got slaw as a side which was OK, though my wife thought it had too much mayo. The best sides were the collards and green beans. Both had lost of flavor and were certainly not vegetarian as evidenced by the ever present pieces of bacon throughout. Overall, we'd eat there again.
