Spicy potato chips?

wc628 | Jan 17, 200812:03 AM 24
Ontario (inc. Toronto) Potato Chips

I'm looking for potato chips that will provide intense heat. The jalapeno flavoured chips found in major supermarkets are pretty tame.

Fiery Habanero Doritos are OK. They just taste cheesy at first but the heat builds slowly the more you eat. Overall they're like Nachos with lots of black pepper. I find the cheese and corn chip taste interferes with the spiciness. Not to mention the ingredient list is a little scary.

10+ years ago I used to buy snack size Jalapeno chips from a sandwich truck at work. They looked deceptively like regular flavoured chips with a dusting of light green powder, but made your tongue burn immediately. The flavour was great, just potato, salt and hot pepper. It wasn't a major brand, and sadly I don't remember the name. The bag had various shades of green.

Are Blair's Death Rain Habanero chips available in the GTA? They are available online at www.extremefoods.com but they're pretty pricy and I'm wary of shipping chips long distance. They would probably arrive as potato crumbs.

What I would also recommend is to get some of Blair's dry rubs and sprinkle them over regular kettle chips. The Death Rain Nitro is the best. If you like anything hot food related make sure to check out www.hotsauceblog.com - I run it for Canada.

The Instant Caterer carries them but as I like to call them - The Instant Rip-Off. Way to overpriced for absolutely anything. If you want quality hot sauce in the city your best and only bet is Taste The 4th Sense on the Danforth or their store in St. Jacobs. Plus they are opening one soon in Collingwood.

Blair's Death Rain chips are available at some Rabba Fine Foods. I know the one near the Skydome (Peter & Front) stocks them. The Fresh & Wild at King & Spadina stocks them too. Rabba is cheaper at $4. Blair's does salsa too.

I originally tried the Cajun chips and thought they were pretty damn hot then I tried the Hababero chips a couple of months later. Wow!

I can confirm the Blairs chips show at some, if not all, 7-11 locations. Besides the Donlands location, the Bloor/Spadina and College/Yonge (slightly north of College) have them on a regular basis.

In terms of flavour, I think the Cheddaer and Buffalo Wings are the best. The heat seems to vary on them. They're marked as medium heat but sometimes seem like more and occassionaly seem mild.

Also, those new P.C. chips (in the silver bags) aren't hot at all. They do have some interesting flavours, though the actual potato chips are your average crinkle cut.

Have you tried the "kurkure" brand of chips? I think they are available in East Indian grocery stores... I've tried the rajasthani flavor and its spicy... different from a regular chip... but definitely spicy!

Apparently Paqui Haunted Ghost Pepper Tortilla Chips are very spicy/hot. They're made in the States and sold at Walmart in the US. They are all natural and non-GMO. Has anyone seen them sold in the GTA?

Coincidentally, I saw some last night at the Pape Foodland. I bought some of their Habanero ones, but haven't tried them yet. Ghost pepper is at the upper limit of how spicy I want something, and I didn't want to risk buying the ghost pepper ones, just to wind up throwing most of them out.

The habanero chips were fairly mediocre. Uneven topping distribution, and the spice level was totally lacking. The flavour that was there was very boring.

I'm in love. A lot of attempts at spicy chips end up with a spicy hit with a fairly bland underlying flavour.
But these Sriracha chips are spicy with great flavour. They may be my new go-to chip.

Just returned from Vancouver where I encountered Kettle Brand Pepperoncini flavour for the first time. Not particularly spicy but an interesting flavour that I'd like to try again. Wondering if they're available in the GTA or Durham Region. Even Kettle Brand couldn't answer my question.
