We tried Speissekammer tonight based on some favorable input on the board and were very dissappointed.
The place was large and had the proper ambience and our server was average friendly, not great or awful, but the kitchen was vey slow at a time when the place wasn't more than half full.
The beer and wine lists were both very good. We were seated and a basket of German rye bread and rolls were delivered with herbed butter. I'd give the bread a B-.
For appetizers we ordered Chanterelle Mushroom Soup and Potato Pancaked with Apple Sauce. The soup was totally lacking of any mushroom flavor whatsoever. It was basically potato soup with a little orangy brown color to indicate that maybe some chanterelles were involved, but we couldn't tell the difference if it had been food coloring.
The potato Pancakes were quite good and crispy. They came with a small ramekin of a good home made apple sauce. Everything in this place was served in gargantuan portion sizes, but there somehow wasn't nearly enough apple sauce. If our waitress was more visible we would have asked for more.
I had Wild Boar which suppossedly came with roast potatoes, but actually came with Lyonnaise potatoes made with a stringy swiss cheese, and Brussels sprouts. The potatoes and sprouts were very good. The Boar was kind of tasteless.
Bonni had the Weiner Schnitzel with Spaetzel and Red Cabbage. The schnitzel was very good, as was the spaetzel. The red cabbage was a bit gelatanous and not quite tart enough.
Even though we only ate half our entrees, we opted to skip dessert, so I can't offer any opinions there.
