New specialty toppings at Lucali

Peter | Mar 15, 2008 06:46 AM

Just a heads-up. I ate at Lucali last Sunday night and Mark had a few new specialty toppings.

One was a marinated mushroom (I forget what kind)-- oil, balsamic and some herbs. Very excellent. Maybe a hair too much of the balsamic for me but I was picking them off straight from the half of the pie designated for my companion. She assures me that when eaten in context of a slice that they are heavenly.

The other topping we sampled on a plate at Mark's behest. It was sun-dried tomato and anchovies wrapped in a slice of (marinated?) eggplant. It was the size of your thumb but he apparently slices it up onto the pizza...

I have to say, this was an awesome combination. Just as you think that either the tomato or the anchovy is overwhelming, one of the other flavors kicks in and mellows everything out. Heated, and in context of a slice of pie I imagine it's even better.

By the way, the waitress didn't mention either of these toppings (or any others) and I didn't see anything on the chalkboard about them (not that anyone really looks up there) so it never hurts to ask if there are any special toppings tonight. ;)
