Having recently moved to the mission, we are getting to try some new restaurants.
I had heard of the great omakase dinner here, so we stopped in on a Friday night. We decided to try some of the specials and see how we felt about the food.
Ginger simmered Mackerel Dinner - This was perhaps the best dish, three pieces of Mackerel fillet slowly cooked with a sauce of soy and ginger. I hope this stays around.
Seared Hamachi with Ume Vinegar - Another Special, which made we want to get some of the Ume (plum) for myself, as it works so well to offset the oily of the fish.
Hamachi Negi Roll - Standard and fresh.
Vegan Chawan Mushi - Would not order this again, but I was surprised at the flavor without the dashi or the egg.
Dinner includes soup, salad and lots of pickled veggies, one of the highlights of the meal.
The place is small, the fuses kept blowing for the kitchen, and the patrons helped develop the communal atmosphere. All add to the atmosphere.
Overall, the food was much reminiscent of a Ryokan: simple preparations, lots of small dishes and fresh ingredients. I would be interested in other suggestions for restaurants such as this.
