In need of help for Special Celebrations

I am flying in from Australia (again. I am working on a trip report from my best of days that included hamburgers, pizza and desserts (that was a tough day). This time for just one day, next Saturday, in order to celebrate two friends bdays. One I am taking to lunch and one I am taking to dinner. I want something upscale and special, but not at all too stuffy (all of us in mid-late 20's). I prefer a tasting menu for both, but could do without it for lunch. The friend I am taking to dinner is allergic to shellfish (shrimp, lobster, etc.), so that shouldn't be a large part of the menu. I have Le Bernardin booked, but rethinking that. I am looking for American, French or Italian suggestions. On my last trip I did Per Se, and was not wowed.

Thanks
