My folks are coming to Chicago in December for my father's birthday, and I'm looking for a wonderful dining experience. They live in NYC, and their favorites there for special occasions are Bouley, Chanterelle, Gramercy Tavern and Gotham Bar and Grill. Dad also really likes smaller, intimate restaurants (I think he would like the atmosphere at a tavola, for example). His favorite cuisines are French, Italian and interesting American/Continental. I'd love any guidance because I'm new to the area and just discovering restaurants myself. I did love Avec, and hear that Blackbird is wonderful. Thanks!
