Melanie broadcasted an invitation to join her at the Native Son No Fooling BBQ PopUp at the Speakeasy joint out in Bayview.
And so we -- PSB, Cynsa, and Will -- did.
"I was told there would be Brisket."
And so there was.
We ran though all the protein and sides on offer:
1. BRISKET: Early bird gets the point cut? This was the first thing I tried and it was the single best thing I had in the meal. Brisket is usually my fav BBQ item, but having never lived in an area with top class BBQ, I'd have to say "no" to "Are you Brisket-experienced?"
But it was definitely among the best I've tried" ... fall apart tender, good quality meat and cooked nicely. The non-point cut brisket was also good but not nearly as good. Also, as we were sitting outside, the considerable convective cooling power of the brisk southern wind didnt help. I'll leave it to Melanie to give expert commentary on Rings and Barks such.
2. PORK RIB: This was a very good pork rib. I've more or less stopped getting ribs because too often they just come off as inferior-but-pricey, dry white meat, although sometimes saved by the sauce . This had great seasoning and was meaty enough not to be dry and flakey. And I didnt need to "hit the sauce".
3. TURKEY: Original strategy was to skip the bird but the Pitmasters apparently promised it would be worth trying. It was ok. It was good-for- turkey, but turkey starts off at a pretty large handicap in my book. I think the others in the party perhaps liked it more than I did?

4. GIANT RIB OF BEEF: "So that's what a $24 rib looks like" ... it was a handsome rib. I think we were also trickle-down beneficiaries of Melanie's BBQ-VIP status and got the Best Rib in the Rack. It was very good, second best item, but frankly it was more or less the temperature of the India Basin atmosphere by the time I tucked into it, so didnt get to try it under optimal conditions.
5. SIDES: POTATO SALAD and CHEESY GRITS were available. I perhaps liked the grits less than the others. I thought they were well done, but just not my thing. I suppose potato salads cover so much ground, execution matters as well as some overlap between what you are looking for and what the makers are aiming for. I liked where the NATIVES took this.
(6. BEER: I ordered the house "Belgian style" beer, the SPEAKEASY MASSACRE. I didnt think it was especially Belgian-style, but it wasnt a bad option for the kind of meal we were having. The SPEAKEASY "SCARFACE" IMPERIAL STOUT I had last time was much better. Although at $5, this is the cheapest beer I've had in SF for a long time. Nevertheles, I'll stick to the Real Belgians at BEL for now.)
