Wonderful carryout (actually, they DO have a couple of tables). Here's their Yahoo Yellow Pages info:
First of all, the name of the place is subject to speculation. Signs say "Spanish Deli/Market", "Deli Spanish Market", and new signs say "Deli Hispanic Market" (they're sprucing the place up, sort of).
Also, the address is apparently up for grabs, too. I couldn't find a number, but the red awning makes it easy to find. It's in the Florida Avenue Market area, on 5th Street NE right side - 5th St is 1-way NB - just north of Neal Place. Around the corner from Litteri's.
You want autentico? This is the real thing. I'm the only Anglo I've ever seen in the place. The guy behind the counter speaks pretty good English, and good-naturedly humors my no-doubt comical attempts at ordering en Espan~ol and asking what the heck some unfamiliar dish might be.
The bistec encebollado is muy saboroso. The chicharrones are succulent. Every seafood dish I've tried has been fabuloso - there are at least one shrimp and one fish selection every day. I love their chili relleno, and it was a tough choice the other day when both it and a shrimp omelet was available. I keep trying different stuff, and it is all muy rico, mi amigos!
It's a steam table setup: look over the available selections and make your choice, and it's combined with rice when appropriate, the bean side of the day, a spot of lettuce & tomato, a wedge of lime, and a couple of substantial tortillas. The lime is a revelation - it turns the lettuce & tomato into a salad, and sends the already excellent entrees over the top.
I'm unsure of their hours of operation. I've only been there lunchtime, but it would be great if I could bring it home for dinner in lieu of pizza or Chinese.
