Spago remains one of my favorite lunch spots! I had lunch here Friday with my mom, visiting from NJ, so when Wolfgang came around working the room, she had to get her picture taken with him. He was so nice and gracious, and maybe he’s had some work done, but he looks great for his age.
Spago is not really a hot starlet place or a happening young place, for anyone who is wondering. The crowd was definitely on the older side, probably 40s and up, with about half the room in suits, probably agents, lawyers, other people who still wear suits to work... And from my experience, dinner is not much different.
We started with the Kärntner Käse Nudeln Giant Farmers Cheese Ravioli (Goat Cheese, Mascarpone, Parmesan, Mint, Chervil and Hazelnut Brown Butter). Amazing! This is served as 6 raviolis, which they split onto two dishes of 3 each for us. They were very rich and full of flavor. This is noted on the menu as one of Wolfgang’s, and it is now one of my favorites.
My mom had the "Shanghai Noodles" with Velvet Chicken & Sweet Shrimp (Chino Farms Stir Fry Vegetables, Thai Basil and Ginger-Black Bean Sauce) which was very tasty – great thick noodles and great sauce.
I had the Grilled Prime Hamburger (minus the cheddar) and fries. The bun was so good – it had a great glaze on top and had both poppy and sesame seeds on it. I thought of taking a photo of the top of the bun, but I was just too hungry and had to just dig in. You can see a bit of it in this photo though, and the bun was perfectly toasted. I’m adding this to my list of favorite burgers. The garlic aioli was perfect, and the grilled onions were great.
For dessert we simply had to go with the cookie platter, and they ended up not charging us for it because we waited unusually long for our entrees. We never complained about this, and I even told them when they would come by with their updates on how much longer it was going to be that we were in no hurry at all. I guess this is just one example of how great the service is at Spago and how well they treat everyone, famous or not. Also, for drinks, we only had tap water, which was constantly refilled.
I'm going to try Spago for dinner in the next couple weeks...
