soybean paper for sushi

Hey everyone, a question - my girlfriend, living now in Philly but from LA loves soybean paper on her sushi, and has been unable to find it anywhere but LA. She took me recently to the California Roll Factory, where I tried and liked it. Does anyone know the origin of using soybean paper for sushi as opposed to nori/know how widespread a practice it is?
