Last evening while in the south street area we decided to give Southwark a try.
In short some good, most bad/mediocre. We are unlikely to return.
You enter the restaurant into a large, crowded and very smokey bar area. Getting past the Friday night revelers while dodging the servers can be a challenge.
We reached the host desk and were promptly greeted. We asked if an outdoor table were available and he responded with a short retort related to the nice evening and everyone wants to sit outside. DUH... he could have nicely said sorry nothing is available right now.
He escorted us into the dining room which had four two tops open. He showed us the one right next to the door which was closest to the bar area. I asked my husband if that was ok with him and before he could answer our uberhost stated "well in a restaurant this small it'll have to be"!!! What the !!!???
Perhaps we should have turned tail and run at that point but we were hungry.
Next fiasco occurred when a couple at the next table flagged down a waitress and said that they didn't mind paying for the drinks, apps and one entree but that the veal was inedible. The waitress was trying to address her concerns when their waiter brushed past the waitress rudly stating "I'll handle this"!!!
Wow a show and we hadn't even paid for dinner theater.
He loudly and very rudely informed them that the restaurant couldn't be held responsible for "different tastes" of its diners and had a no refund policy and they would have to cough it up. (the money not the food) He said that it is even stated on the menu! Hmmm, that I had to see.
True to his word on the back of the menu it states:
"NO REFUNDS ON FOOD DUE TO PERSONAL TASTE"
I've got to ask my fellow chows to weigh in on this one. Have you ever seen this type of disclaimer printed on a menu in a supposedly nice restaurant? What do you think of this policy?
On to the food.
For apps my sig ordered the oysters, 6 small ones with flavorless caviar for $16. I had the warm peach salad. After reading the disclaimers and warnings to ask about the food I inquired as to whether the salad had any greens or if it was just the warm peaches with onions. Our server assured me that it came with some but not a ton of grees. Ok it came with a tower of peaches and onions and two tiny sprigs of field greens as garnish. LOL
For entrees my sig had the bunny, decent but very small portion. I had the scallops over lentil and butternut squash. The flavors were fine on the 2 1/2 scallops I had. Yes you read it right. I had two full sized (hot huge) scallops and one that had obviously been cut in half. Guess that's the standard allotment. The lentils were fine but the butternut squash was hard, totally hard. That was odd.
We didn't stay for dessert.
FWIW our server was very pleasant and accommodating.
