"south" on wilshire - a scene but pretty good eats

this place called south just opened in santa monica. it doesn't really look like a "southern" bar - but it has a southern food themed menu and serves drinks in faux jelly jars. so, i guess that makes it southern.

this place was PACKED! and there is no list for tables - so you have to stalk tables to sit down. luckily i saw something in the corner and was able to sit down. we ordered the crawfish popcorn (cornmeal battered/deep fried crawfish tails), chicken & waffle sliders (chicken tenders sandwiched b/w mini waffles), and ribs (they were out of fried chicken which can be combo'd with the ribs).

the food was pretty tasty for a bar. nothing amazing here. the crawfish popcorn was v. crispy and fairly well seasoned, but could of used a bit more kick. they served it with ranch which was disappointing. i would have rather had something spicy with it or a remoulade. the chicken & waffle sliders were great. these came with standard fake gravy and maple syrup. the mini waffle was sturdy enough to hold up to the chicken tender. i really liked these. the ribs were also really good. i think there was just a dry rub on them that was pretty sweet and a smidge sour. not spicy at all - but that's how i like bbq. these were tender on the inside and crispy on the outside - really pretty tasty.

i had a pimm's cup cocktail that was great. v. refreshing. they had a couple of other "southern" drinks - but no sazerac which was disappointing.

i can't say i'd rush back to this place b/c i'm not into scrounging for a table (except at FOs which is worth it) - but i thought it was pretty good and it was nice to have fairly good (and different) food at a bar.
