South Beach Weekend report

Sharon | Jan 24, 2002 10:49 AM

We spent two nights at the Marriott South Beach the 18th and 19th.

Friday Night: Smith and Wollensky, a steak house chain with a spectacular location on the Government Cut (the inlet to Port of Miami with all the container & cruise ships). Nice touches such as a prechilled champagne flute for my champagne apertif (nice NV Moet), perfectly prepared cold lobster appetizer properly removed & presented on the shell with a cream ginger mayonnaise, great baby food: creamed spinach that was improved by the introduction of fresh dill. I had a properly aged, perfectly cooked filet with a proper bernaise (most seem like a mix these days). We had unobtrusive service, things just arrived at the right time. I loved the browned onion pumpernickel rolls. The view of sunset on Fisher Island was great and it was pleasant to watch the cruise ships head out for the weekend. You can eat outside at tables set right on the water and we may do this the next time as we will definitely go another time. Big bucks but good steak houses always are. Alacarte and all entrees are $32. Great cabernets by the glass from $6 to $26.

Sunday Brunch was at Nemos. Nice Bellini but I am now spoiled by the chilled champagne glasses at S&W and also the bar at Joes Stone Crab. (Perrier Joet was the bar champagne there and a 3 hr wait on Saturday night sent us in seach of another place but I digress)
Nemos was lovely as we sat outside under shade trees and helped outselves to a diverse buffet with virtually no steam tables. Interesting salads and superb freshly baked croissants: again the real thing. We felt it was a good value at $26. pp plus extra for the bellinis.

Only sour note: after being spurned by the wait at Joes we walked the short distance to its polar opposite: the Big Pink and had diner food and watched football. We were definitely not in a chic mood for Ocean Drive being tired and not ready for a late night. Kitchen and service were pretty off. Not sure what was wrong but the improperly prepared items were graciously taken off our tab and free drinks were proffered. At least they cared. Great sweet potato fries. We might give them another go. Who knows.
