South Bay Fish Restaurants - Reviews

I love fish but I don't like taking out a mortgage for it and I don't like Red Lobster (except for their cheddar bay bisquits).

Here are three places I'd like to share with the CH's. After eating in downtown LA at Fisherman's outlet, I found two places which are similar but much easier to get to.

1. Baja Fish Grill
1605 Pacific Coast Hwy (near Western)
Harbor City, CA 90710
(310) 326-5040

Mom and Pop run restaurant. Karl (I think that's his name) is the owner. The concept is fresh fish, grilled to order at a reasonable price. The portions are generous. The restaurant's decor is very plain. You order at the front counter and find an open table. The fish is fresh, and inexpensive. You can fill up with a fresh piece of grilled Mahi Mahi (served with rice or fries and cole slaw and bread) for under 8-9 dollars. You can get the fish either with a spicy cajun spice or a garlic butter sauce. The salmon is usually fresh too. They also have not so healthy options that are deep fried (the shrimp plate is inexpensive). They also have baja fish taco specials weekly. This was a knock off of the California Fish Grill.

I've probably eaten there 20+ times and I've only been disappointed with two options, the chowder and the fried calamari (because they were calamari steaks, not rings, and I found them rubbery).

2. California Fish Grill (near El Pollo Inka)
1425 W Artesia Blvd Ste 9
Gardena, CA 90248-3228

Pretty much the same as the restaurant above, only it's a small chain and maybe just a bit better (in terms of consistency) and ambience. Prices are pretty much within 1 dollar of each other for similar fish dishes.

I tend to go to the Baja Fish Grill because it's closer to where I work and I like the owner/operator.

When I'm in the mood for more of a full serivce fish place that offers good portions, friendly service, non-pretentious atmosphere, at fair(ish) prices, I go to the:

South Bay Grill
23805 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance 90505
At W 238th St
Phone: 310-378-0344

The food isn't stellar but I've never left hungry, always love the hot complimentary sourdough bread, tand he salt water taffy treats they often give you with the bill (that they sell at a reasonably cheap price in small baggies). The tastiest thing I've eaten there is their shrimp skewers... which is like 15 shrimp packed together on a skewer.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?
