Sitting on a forgotten stretch of University Ave., Los Gatos Meats and Smoke House signals an authenticity rare in these parts. Part smokehouse, part retail store, the very friendly folks here offer wonderful smoked and marinated meats and sausages (including Swedish potato,Louisiana hotlinks and excellant Bratwurst), vacuum packed and ready for your grill. Exotic selections are also available including ostrich, alligator, wild boar and venison(farm raised in New Zealand).
Importantly, these folks make sandwiches: giant delicious ones, lovingly twice-wrapped in butcher paper and garnished with a dill spear. The ham and cheese combo was piled many layers high, large enough for two. The soft roll used for the chicken club was really perfect for taming the towering layers of BBQ/smoked chicken. Drinks and assorted chips are also available. We sat outside where there are three nonmatching tables and chairs...in other words, perfect!
Also this is the first place on this side of the Bay that I have heard of that prepares its own TURKDUCKEN, the mutant three layered poultry supposedly so delicious, that scientists, right now, are trying to isolate the genes to bring this thing to the mass market by next Thanksgiving.
Also, they are currently brining their signature corned beef for St Patrick's Day. If you buy one on March 17, they'll throw in a head of cabbage, gratis.
