half-sour pickles

Does anyone know if (and if so, how) one can make half-sours at home?

I know nothing about pickling, "mothers" etc. Here in Chicago one can get Ba Tampte brand only irregularly in a few stores, and only at outrageous prices. It always seemed to me that there really shouldn't be that much to creating a pickle, but I have yet to find a recipe. Any ideas?
