About 15-20 years ago my father used to buy loaves of very dark brown--almost black, firm, sour bread (Pumpernickel?) somewhere in the East Village or Lower East side. I remember that it came with a small paper label (red and white?) affixed to the bottom of the oval-shaped loaf.
I've been looking around for it again for years, does anyone remember this type of bread or know where it's available?
