Soulfire - BBQ Ruben [sic]

Went to Soulfire BBQ (192 Harvard Ave Allston) this afternoon for lunch with a friend who really likes their smoked chicken and this was a new sandwich on the menu since I was last there. I really liked it.

Your basic reuben with subs of medium thick sliced smoked brisket instead of corned beef and coleslaw instead of sauerkraut. The brisket was just right tender without being tough or mushy or too fatty. While having it in a sandwich like this with other flavors made up for my main objection to their brisket in the past - that it didn't have enough smoke flavor. It had just enough to fit in here without over-dominating the sandwich, while the other flavors made up for it not having the essence of smokiness some other places do.

Had the collards as a side and I think they've toned down the excessive sweetness that could be a problem in the past, while maybe even adding more nice smoky chunks of meat for flavor. Altogether a nice satisfying but not too heavy chilly day lunch, which gives me a reason beyond more convenient location to head back vs just waiting until the next Blue Ribbon trip.

My one quibble, and that's all it is, although it really annoys me when places do this, was that when I specifically ordered a diet Coke, they didn't mention that they only carried Pepsi products. Just gave me a cup. Swapped for iced tea without problem, but as I said, it annoys me - this isn't Atlanta or someplace else down south where coke can be a generic for soda.
