Soul Food in Treme

Sarah C | Aug 1, 200210:08 AM

Hungry Celeste was asking about soul food in Treme. The one I've been to, which is extra, extra delicious, is Two Sisters' Kitchen. It's on Derbigny, about two blocks off Canal (turn right if you're going toward the lake on Canal -- is that direction east, north, or ?). Very small, crowded, and friendly. Usually you will see some NOPD officers eating there. I've had greens, cornbread, fried chicken, pig tail (!), smothered pork chop, mac & cheese, etc. They have lots of daily specials. I think that area qualifies as Treme? I'm not sure if they're open in the evening; I've only been for lunch.

Also there is Willie Mae's Scotch House, which I think is the one that Lolis Elie writes about. It is at 2401 St. Ann, right behind Dooky Chase. Willie Mae is getting quite elderly and has been considering retirement so I don't know the current status. This place is tiny (and squeaky clean), and the one time I was there, there wasn't really a menu. They just told us what the choices were that day.
