Sorella's Breakfast Report - October 2009

I went to Sorella's for breakfast for the first time with some friends. These friends had been raving about how great the omelets and pancakes were and the sheer variety of breakfast options. I was sorely disappointed.

First off, there were a number of boards with various crepes, omelets and pancakes listings. These didn't seem to be organized in any particular way, other than genre. But, the boards in various rooms seemed to have different specials. The menu was overwhelmingly huge - a good 6 pages of options. And, each choice seemed to have really busy ingredients - at least 4 ingredients to each option.

I was a bit egged out and I'm not a big pancake eater. So, I decided to try the breakfast polenta, the acapulco. The menu described it as a polenta cake with avocado, jalapenos, mozzarella cheese, salsa and various spices (I think cayenne, cumin, etc). I chose to top it with tofu.

Sounded great in concept, right? Blech. The polenta cake, which was great in theory, was dry, dry, dry and not that flavorful, despite the accoutrements, spices and cheese. The jalapenos were sliced thickly and pretty raw. The cheese was slightly congealed and didn't even taste like anything. The tofu and salsa topping it were fine. But, I couldn't get over how dry the polenta cake was, even with the avocado sort of layered with it.

And, the potatoes served with it were also bland and too soft.

Lastly, one of my friends (another newbie to the restaurant) was sorely disappointed in her omelet. I forget the kind but it had black olives and asparagus. The asparagus were in whole stalks and must have been undercooked because she left most of the spears uneaten on her plate.

Maybe the simpler omelets would have been a better choice or the pancakes. But, unless I'm with GREAT company, I won't be headed back anytime soon.
