Chowmate loves fried chicken, so the other night, on the rec of ChowNews' own Thi, we headed down south to Flossie's in Torrance. It's a little hole-in-the wall place in a strip mall on the corner of Redondo Beach Blvd. & Yukon. Chowmate came with one mission in mind: fried chicken, which came with two sides. He chose red beans & rice and mac'n'cheese. To round out the southern experience, I ordered smothered pork chops, which came with three sides: corn with okra and tomatoes, collard greens, and candied yams. Biscuits and corn bread came with our meals. Chicken was the perfect shade of crispy brown, not greasy, and absolutely delicious. The pork chops were soft, tasty, meaty, and succulent - no knife required - and smothered in tasty brown gravy which was much lighter than it looked. Sides were great. Red beans & rice and the corn/okra/tomatoes nicely peppery, slightly hot. Mac'n'cheese creamy, but firm enough to have just the right amount of chewiness. Collard greens were delicious - you could taste the greens themselves instead of some greasy cooking liquid. The candied yams were sweet, but not overly so, not syrupy, and had a fruity orange-y flavor. The biscuits and corn bread, however, were disappointingly bland. With all the other food, we really didn't need them (portions were huge - our two dinners could have served 4). It was getting to be closing time, so we ordered a peach cobbler to go, and retired to the nearest coffee place (unfortunately a Starbucks) to enjoy dessert. The cobbler was another disappointment. The "shortbread" was a globby, gloppy hunk of dough sitting amid the peaches. The fruit wasn't too sweet, and would have been a good complement to a crispier cobbler topping. On the whole, Flossie's is a great place for a casual or to-go Southern meal - just skip the bakery items.
