SONA and FATHERS' DAY thoughts...

It's wonderful to report that on the heels of the Food & Wine Magazine Best Chefs of 2003, David and Michelle Myer's SONA is better than ever. I was part of a small group that, I believe, were the first customers to dine in SONA on their opening night. We had heard of the restaurant but were literally driving around looking for an early (5:30pm) place to dine before visiting relatives at Cedars. On our third visit two weeks ago the food continues to amaze and the enthusiasm of the staff gains in confidence and focus. This is a comfortable restaurant that dares to be what it claims: innovative and caring. The winelist, we are told, is evolving and the menu changes regularly but if the slow cooked Scottish Salmon is available and the warm Cookies and Milk for dessert, order them! We tend to order a la carte but there is a wonderful six course tasting menu if you're really hungry that Josh will happily pair with wines if you like.

P.S.
Spent Fathers' Day at Tim and Liza Goodell's RED PEARL KITCHEN in Huntington Beach. More jewel like than Chinois, this is a fun and wonderfully realized Chinese bistro featuring some of the best food around. Save room for the very un Chinese desserts. (Surf boards are optional.)
