New on Solano Ave.

Soon to replace Frishman's Deli at the corner of Solano and Peralta in Berkeley is Talavera Cafe, which says it offers traditional Mexican food and European desserts. Although the space has been mostly papered over in recent times, it's evident that it will be a far more colorful place (patterned tiles, turquoise and other bright colored paint) than its drab predecessor. One of the owners (the husband; apparently, the wife cooks) said that it will focus on moles and tamales. He also said they planned to open in a couple of weeks (based on the date of the conversation, I'd say end of September; the first printed signs of what's coming appeared yesterday).
