Just came back from an enjoyable meal at Spoon Thai--good Issan Sausage, good wide rice noodles, good potstickers...but not so good "Catfish" Salad. I put the catfish in quotations because, quite frankly, I couldn't taste any inside the large chunks of deep fried coating. It was as if there weren't any catfish in the salad at all, just coating, cilantro and apples. The cilantro-apple mix is a good one--very tasty--but I was really disappointed with the catfish preparation. Is it typical for the "catfish" in Spoon Thai's catfish salad to function as an empty signifier of flavor? Maybe I've missed something, but I don't think food should be that hard to taste.
