Hey, folks -
Went to Soi4 Bangkok Eatery in Oakland last night for the second time and it was so much better than the first time! I had been put off by the very un-Thai decor, but once I got used to that I relaxed and enjoyed the meal.
Two of us shared the paupia sod, rolls of blue crab, egg, tofu, sweet sausage, & veggies in a sweet thick plum sauce. Quite delicious - somewhere in between your deep fried and your fresh spring roll, since the rolls were hot (steamed, perhaps?) but definitely not fried. The combination of flavors inside was really nice.
Then we had a fantastic salad of grilled eggplant with minced pork and prawns, some veggies in thin strips, and garlic lime coconut dressing. I would go back just for that salad. Melt-in-your-mouth tangy good!
Main course was short ribs in a basil and kaffir lime panang curry sauce. It was delicious but a little hard to eat (big chunks of meat requiring a little sawing away) and the sauce separated pretty quickly, leaving us to think of all the oil we had already consumed.
All in all a very good meal (I don't recommend the cocktails, though - not first-rate, anyway, and not worth $6). Dishes are $8-$10 and not tiny, but not huge. Each dish was easily consumed by us two hungry gals.
