Can't believe the last time we ate out was Chinese New Year 2020 -- and in a different continent! Anyway, the family decided we had enough of home cooking and take-out and we went to Soi 4 in Rockridge rather on a whim. Not much by way of reviews on here, so hopefully this will be useful for CHers.
We had an early dinner since that suits our family better. It also allows us to take advantage of the 'happy hour' pricing on some of the starters/snacks: although it wouldn't be sole motivator for me.
vegetable spring rolls: fine, but nothing to write home about
corn cakes: decent with a nice, small side of pickled cucumbers
mu ping pork satay: very good indeed with a moreish tamarind dipping sauce
lemongrass chicken wings: again fine, but along with the spring rolls, the weakest of the offerings
fried salt/pepper squid: tender, not overly greasy -- yum.
turnip cakes: I had not had a Thai version of these before. They came with fried bean-sprouts, egg and chopped chives or garlic shoots (not sure which). Outstanding dish of the evening.
wagyu beef with green curry and roti (and we got a side of jasmine rice too): very tasty. The beef was melt in mouth tender, it wasn't what I would call wagyu in the Japanese sense, but heck, I'm no expert. The sauce was yummy and honestly, next time might go for the vegetable green curry instead, since the sauce was where it was at.
To finish: mango sticky rice. I am not a fan of sticky rice but my daughter likes it, so we ordered, but it was very good indeed.
Total damage: about $110 including tax and tip which I think was very good value given the quality of the cooking. Both my kids loved the food too. We ordered judiciously to avoid super spicy, and I get the impression they don't crank up the spice here as some thai restaurants (and in thailand) can do...but there was no lack of flavour.
The place wasn't busy, which is a shame, but that may be because Rockridgers are far too hip to dine out this early!
