It will take a lot of guts to compete and open up a Hong Kong style cafe/bakery in the same plaza as ' Luculus '....one of the best Hong Kong style bakery in the GTA.
Today, driven by curiosity, I made a trip to this newly opened outfit and bought a few of their ' visually appealing but unhealthy ' baked goods to try. ( excessive white sugar, white flour, gluten....need I say more? Ha! ).
First impression of my visit was that the selection offered was quite creative, varied and huge. A few intriguing options include ' Baked egg bun with Singapore coconut Kayan jam filling', ' Baked Thai Red Curry Chicken Bun ', ' Baked Macau/Portuguese style chicken Bun ', ' ANGUS Beef Bun?!'.....etc.
Also, a selection of single-dish/meal, baked rice or spaghetti with chicken or pork-chop in cream or tomato based sauce were also offered. However, unlike Luculus, these items were only available at noon ( an hour and a half later than Luculus availabilty!.....bad planning and timing?! ). Sadly, I would need to make another trip to give these a try?! At $8.99, they are $2.50 more than Luculus....though size of container looked a bit bigger.
Collection of western style cake was quite impressive by HK/Chinese bakery standard.
The four products bought were an Egg Custard tart, a Portuguese Tart, Bun with Singapore Kayan jam and the Macau/Portuguese Chicken bun. Presentation and appearance was a bit more refined and appealing than Luculus. Taste profile was at par and enjoyable. Price point was identical if not a touch more?
Time will tell whether both or only one will survive this head-to-head battle. So far, based on my initial experience, I still prefer Luculus products.....especially their Fried Curry Beef bun, Chicken Roll, Taro Croquettes, Steamed Lotus leaf wrapped stick rice and an excellent Steamed pork spare ribs with black beans on rice! The latter, cannot find a better version elsewhere!
