Snowdays in Flushing (Shaved Ice Dessert)

Pookipichu | Sep 25, 201508:01 AM     5

After dinner at Iki, I headed over to Snowdays for shaved ice. They opened a little over a month ago on Prince Street near Nan Xiang.

The place is clean, laid out similarly to some of the nicer Red Mangos, with tables and seating. Top 40 music is thumping in the background. The places was fairly busy given how late it was and I appreciate that they're open late (11PM and 12AM depending on day)

You order from a choice of different shaved cream flavors (milk) and there's one vegan option (shaved coconut milk). There are several Asian dessert topping options for the shaved ice. I picked shaved coconut ice, with mochi, red bean, mango and blueberry. You also have the choice of sauces but I opted not to add a sauce as it might have been too sweet for me.

The coconut ice is lightly sweet, much less sweet than typical ice cream places, the mochi has sugar in it even though it's plain rice, and I wish it wasn't sweet, and otherwise I liked it, the mochi pieces are soft and chewy. The mango was fresh, some sweet pieces, some slightly tart, not too fibrous. The blueberries were also fresh, a little tart, but I liked them and it brought down the sweetness of the dessert. The red bean was a little gloopy, and a wee bit sweeter than I want but still within range and enjoyable. The shaved ice itself is the snowy like consistency popular in Taiwan, xue bing and much nicer than your typical shaved ice places with larger harder, inconsistently sized pieces of shaved ice. It's a great addition to the dessert food scene in Flushing, especially given the options for those with lactose issues. I was disappointed however that they do not have dairy free chocolate topping and sauce options.

I ordered the small (which starts at $5) and it's a big cup but it's still a little pricey. Total was $7.62 with my choice of toppings.
