I was in the East Bay today and decided to have lunch at the Smokehouse, the burger place that started in 1951. I hadn't been there in maybe 30 years, and was reminded of it recently by an article in berkeleyside.com. Anyway, I ordered a double cheeseburger and chocolate shake, waited for my order to come up, and then sat down to eat it. The good news is that the chocolate shake was probably the best one I've had in years. It tasted of vanilla as well as chocolate and was both thick and very good. The bad news is the burger was one of the worst I've ever had, two small very thin patties cooked to death and dry as a bone, with no detectable flavor from the meat. The place is very popular, so I suppose other people have different opinions of the burgers.
