smoked duck insanity

I had my Xmas cocktail party last Saturday and I served something I recently discovered at Woodlands in Kentfield. They have a Willie Bird lightly smoked duck breast roll that is prepared and cured like a ham. It looks like a mini ham too. They slice it for you deli style. Anyway, I was going to use it to make little tea sandwiches - mini orange zest muffins with a dab of quince jelly and the duck. Well, I ran out of time and didn't assemble them that way. I just left the duck on a plate. It disappeared quickly and later in the night I remembered I had more in the fridge. I took the still deli paper wrapped package out and started walking out of the kitchen to refill the plate. I got about 10 feet and was suddenly surrounded by a pack of guests who descended on the duck like hungry wolves. They were just grabbing it off the paper. Now just for the record there was plenty of great food at the party, so it wasn't just hunger. This stuff makes people a little crazy, it's SO good! My husband said the whole scene was a little scary; he'd never seen people like that before. Anyway, the only place I've noticed it is at Woodlands. They have an awesome selection of deli meat. They also carry the full range of Niman Ranch products. I got a Niman Ranch Applewood Smoked boneless ham there for the party as well that was completely devoured. I never even got to taste it! But back to the duck. Go try some! It doesn't even need anything with it. It's awesome all by itself.
