Smitty's Grill, Pasadena (report)

DanaB | Jun 30, 2003 05:35 PM

I had lunch at Smitty's Grill on Lake Ave. in Pasadena today. I must say, I was very impressed, especially in light of some prior negative posts about this restaurant here on chowhound.

In particular, our service was excellent--the waiter really seemed enthusiastic about his job, and when describing the specials, enticed us into trying an albacore tuna salad, made with fresh tuna, that had been poached, chilled, and flaked into big chunks, then mixed with a mayonnaise/tartar sauce like dressing. Sandwich was served on well-grilled sourdough bread (reminded me of the bread served at the pantry) and sharp cheddar, accompanied by a red and green cabbage slaw, with a few dried cranberries mixed in, that was very lightly dressed with a vinegar based dressing, a good accompaniment for the rich sandwich.

The sandwhich was really tasty, but what impressed me most was the great, hospitable, friendly service. After the recent thread on the Not About Food board debating whether there's a general decline in restaurant service, I wanted to make sure to report on a place that seems to value good service. It was very refreshing to have a waiter who liked his job and was good at it, after all the wanna-be actor/waiters you can run into in more trendy places.

Overall would definitely go back to Smitty's again.
110 S. Lake Ave., Pasadena 626-792-9999. Two, for lunch, with beverages and coffee, was $32.00.
