Smitty's Fried

Smitty's Fried Fish and stuff.

I was cruisin' down Venice Boulevard, listening to the new Ghostface Killah album, intending to head to Taqueria Sanchez, when Ghostface starts rappin' about fried chicken, and goddamn does it make me want some fried chicken. I remember that I'm a few blocks from Smitty's, a fried fish and chicken joint that was recommended a year ago and that I hadn't tried.

There are seven cars blasting hip-hop in the parking lot. My car is the ugliest, but it's blasting the loudest. Hah!

The fried fish and chicken are strictly competent, nothing more. They are freshly fried to order, but the batter is sort of tasteless. The chicken batter seems to be aiming for exactly the effect of KFC, but a step fresher.

There are not odd spices, there is no particular crunch of flour, there is no love. It seems strictly by-the-book.

The fish is not particularly flavorful, nor is it rank. It is fried quiet skillfully, so it's nice and moist, but there is no flavor to be concentrated by the frying process.

In other words: for about the same price, legions better than, say, KFC or Popeye's (which I do hit up when I need fried chicken fast), so that's saying something. But nothing in the same league, vicinity, universe and the beautifully and lovingly fried chickens and fishes of Stevie's on the Strip and Flossie's.

I heard somebody talking to the staff - looked like he was an old customer who was a little shocked when he walked in, and inquired about if there had been a management change.

The clerk person said something back, but I couldn't make it out through the thick Chinese accent.
