I grew up in Milwaukee where one of the spring rituals is a smelt fry. A smelt is a small (maybe 6 inches)fish who spawn in the rivers feeding lake superior and michigan. They are caught by shining a Coleman lantern in the water to attract them and netting them. (Really!) They are gutted and fried in hot oil and eaten with copious amounts of beer, often to the strains of ribald poetry. Almost every church and fraternal organization has a smelt fry.
Has anyone ever heard of a smelt fry in the twin cities?
